"Birth is powerful.....let it empower you"
It has been so very cold this past week, today is -24 with the wind chill! Burrrr.
Such a change from the 10+ we had on Sunday.
Sunday was the day we expected our cow Francis to have her calf.
A quick check determined she was showing all the signs of labor.
Francis was "springing",her milk is full, lots of mucus secretion, kicking at her belly through the pain and isolating herself from the other cows.
I kept a close eye on her all day.
I felt it was time to move her around 3pm in to her own barn away from the other cows so she would have the room needed to have her calf without 20 other cows getting in her way.Highland's have a way of being very social and the young ones will nose right in on births.
This did not go as planned.
We put her in the corral, the barn was attached so she would be able to go in or out as she wanted.
After eating the dish of grain we used to encourage her to come with us, she walked over to the wooden rails and made one leap straight up and over the 4 foot fence. There she was back with the fold.
I decided to leave her with them fearful she would get hurt or hurt the baby if she tried that move again, I also did not want to cause undue stress.
I forked the manure from the night before out of the main cow barn and bedded it down with a fresh layer of straw, hoping she would use it to give birth on.We also bedded down a place outside the barn just encase.
Well as of right now there is still no calf! I don't know why or what's going on.
I can see the calf moving, rolling around the left side of her swollen belly.
I check every couple of hours and nothing.
I sure hope she decides to keep it in for awhile longer, this cold snap we are in is far to cold to be having a calf.
Once the calf does arrive and momma is finished cleaning and bonding,we will carry the calf to the other barn so mom and baby can have a space to themselves.
A nice warm,private place.
I had a strange dream that I named the calf Unique...not sure what it means if anything but maybe this calf will be a different color then we have seen before, who knows.
In other news I got in touch with the girl who bought my sheep last night.
They are all expecting lambs mid March!
I'm so excited for her.
I have been thinking about my sheep alot lately, missing them.I will post the pictures here as she shares them with me.
Are you expecting any new babies?
